A Step-by-step Guide on How to Block Someone on Gmail

Keyword: gmail block sender

Introduction

Blocking someone on Gmail is easy and it's a good way to keep the spam out of your inbox. When you block an email address, all future emails from that sender will go straight to your trash folder (unless they're also marked as spam). Blocking someone on Gmail will not stop them from sending you messages through other apps or platforms like Facebook Messenger or Google Hangouts.

Step 1: Log in to your Gmail account.

Log in to your Gmail account. Click on the inbox icon on the top-left corner of your screen to open your email inbox. Enter your username and password in the login screen that appears, then click [Sign In].

Step 2: Open the email from the sender you wish to block.

Next, open the email from the sender you wish to block. You can do this by clicking on the email link, or by clicking on “view” in your inbox, and then selecting “show original.”

Next, look for an option that says “Block [sender].” If you see this option at all, it will be near the top of the email's body text.

If there is no such section in your Gmail account yet, don't worry! This step will create one for you automatically whenever someone sends an unwanted message to your Gmail address in future (you'll see why later).

Step 3: Click on the three dots next to Reply, as shown below.

  • Click on the three dots next to Reply, as shown below.

  • The three dots will be in a different place depending on the email client you are using. In Gmail for example, it will be in the right side of the email; in Outlook, Outlook 365 and Hotmail it will be at the top right corner.

Step 4: A drop-down menu will appear. Click Block [sender] from this menu.

  • Click the three dots next to Reply.

  • A drop-down menu will appear.

  • Click Block [sender] from this menu.

Step 5: You'll then see a pop-up confirming that the sender has been blocked. You can choose to report spam, if you think the message is a scam or phishing attempt, or Report and block if it's an inappropriate message. Click on Block. The sender is now blocked and you won't be bothered by them again.
